Yesterday, the Oscars happened on live TV, to the amusement of nearly thirty million people. With every Oscar comes big wins, like Best Picture and Best Screenplay. But every year, people will complain about the snubs of the night. For the people who don’t know, a snub is whenever something should deserve something, but it fails to take home the gold. And this year had a series of films that would make anyone just a little ticked off.

1. Avengers: Infinity War for Best Visual Effects

If you’ve seen Infinity War, you’ll know how much work was put into the scenery. For example, the sculpting of Titan and the spaceships Thanos used to attack Earth were some of the best examples of CGI within the past decade. But, Black Panther took the win for this one. I’ve seen Black Panther, and it’s a great example of visual effects. But whenever you have to create entire characters with nothing but a computer, it makes you wonder.

2. First Man for Best Picture

First Man is an excellent example of a history film combined with modern effects. But it didn’t even get nominated for best picture. It’s a glorious and beautiful journey through Earth and the moon, but it didn’t even get nominated. Go see it yourself and develop your own opinion.

3. The lack of a host

I know this really doesn’t count as a snub, but who cares? I don’t. This was the first Oscars in thirty years without a host, and the last time a host-free show happened, Rob Lowe and Snow White ended up tap dancing and singing about the different movie stars coming to the event. Ouch. And the thing about the Oscars is that its trademark feature is the host. And without it, were we left scratching our heads.

4. The truncated original song performances

It’s a tough call, but the Original Song performances were incredibly short. Combined with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performing “Shallow”, and only three other songs making the cut for a performance, it’s simply too short. Original songs are usually an underrated category, but whenever they do happen, the people are happy.

5. Netflix

Netflix took a hard hit this year. For the first time in the company’s existence, they were nominated for Best Picture, but were snubbed harder than a dog’s tail. Roma was the film that was set to win Best Picture, and Netflix pumped out 25 million dollars for it to do so. And guess what? They lost. Netflix didn’t win a single Oscar last night to the disappointment of many. But as they say, there’s always next year. Right?

In conclusion, the Oscars brought a strange yet wonderful treat for all Americans. And while it wasn’t without its flaws, it created a great show for celebrities and your average Joe alike.
